When focusing solely on a car’s features, it’s easy to overlook the overall driving experience. While new technology and luxurious amenities are appealing, they don’t mean much if the car doesn’t drive well. That’s why we appreciate the 2024 Toyota Prius Prime. This plug-in hybrid not only offers a satisfying driving experience but also provides an EPA-rated electric range of 39 miles before needing to use the gas engine.
Impressive, right? But our XSE Premium test model came with $9,000 worth of extras.
With a fully loaded 2024 Prius Prime XSE Premium costing around $43,000, there are many electric and hybrid alternatives to consider. So, is the Premium Prius worth the price? After driving it extensively, we’ve identified both its strengths and shortcomings.
Why the Prius Prime XSE Premium is Worth $43,000
Driving Experience
The Prius is now enjoyable to drive. From the standard model to the Prime plug-in hybrid, Toyota has made a car that’s both fun and surprisingly quick, especially considering its reputation for sluggish acceleration. While the car can be a bit noisy at highway speeds, the overall driving experience is one of its best features.
Design
Imagine you don’t know the Prius is a Toyota. Cover up the badges and take a fresh look. It’s impressive, right? Toyota’s design, especially with the 19-inch wheels standard on most 2024 Prius models, makes the car look competitive with nearly any vehicle under $50,000.
Technology
The 2024 Prius Prime features a 12.3-inch infotainment touchscreen, standard on the XSE Premium and available on the mid-level XSE. Although we wish it were tilted towards the driver, its size and horizontal orientation are beneficial. Apple CarPlay, for instance, is much easier to use on this larger screen. Additionally, the 360-degree camera, part of the Advanced Technology package, is a practical feature that’s easy to use.
Convenience
One standout feature of the XSE Premium is the power liftgate, uncommon in non-SUVs at this price point. It’s a convenient addition, making loading and unloading easier.
Fuel Efficiency
With the 2024 Prius Prime, spikes in gas prices are less of a concern. The plug-in hybrid nature means you can rely more on electric power when gas prices rise. The XSE and XSE Premium trims offer 39 miles of electric range, while the lighter base SE offers 44 miles.
Where the Prius Prime XSE Premium Falls Short
Climate Control
The Prius only offers single-zone climate control, so you’ll have to share the same temperature setting with your front passenger. Additionally, rear air vents are not available, which is a drawback compared to competitors like the 2025 Camry hybrid and 2024 Kia Niro plug-in hybrid.
Interior Design
While the interior features red ambient lighting and accents, the door panels lack the design flair expected at this price point. Compared to models like the 2025 Camry XSE, the door panels are quite plain.
Space
The 2024 Prius Prime has a cozy, even cramped interior. While it offers a decent 20.3 cubic feet of cargo space, it’s less than what you’d find in the Honda Civic hatchback. Rear seat space is also more limited compared to competitors.
Driver Display
For $43,000, we expected a larger and more customizable driver display. The 7.0-inch screen above the steering wheel is functional but lacks the personalization and visual appeal found in competitors’ displays.
Is It a Value at $43,000?
The 2024 Prius Prime XSE Premium offers a blend of style, performance, and efficiency, making it a strong contender in its category. However, some features are missing, and the value proposition is more compelling in the XSE trim. Despite this, for those planning to keep the car long-term, the XSE Premium’s additional features, such as the power liftgate and better sound system, might justify the higher price. Overall, the Prius Prime XSE Premium is worth considering for its long-term value and driving experience.
